NTPv4 Internet Time Reference Server

ntp.baragwanath.co.za  is a freely accessible 'non pool' public NTP Time Server, synchronised to a GPS reference or alternately the South African Master Clock, maintained on a voluntary basis. The time server will make accurate time available to most NTP, SNTP and 'Windows Internet Time' clients to within the specified accuracy limits depending the time synchronisation protocol used, the operating system of the PC being synchronised and network latency (delays) of the Internet, between the server and the PC being synchronised. Most current time sync protocols such as NTP compensate for this delay.

The server is situated in Randpark, Johannesburg, South Africa, permanently online to the Internet on a Telkom ADSL line via upstream ISP; MWEB South Africa.

NTP v4 (to RFC1305), SNTP and the earlier 'Time Protocol' (to RFC868) are supported at least as a Stratum 2 reference. (Stratum 3 if defaulted for redundancy purposes).

In theory, the Time Server closest to you (with the lowest 'ping' time) should provide the better accuracy results when setting up your time sync client application. Enter ntp.baragwanath.co.za  as the URL or 'time server address' in your time sync client to access this time service.

There are many time synchronisation clients freely available on the Internet and all Windows Operating Systems since Windows 2000 have a built in time sync service, 'Windows Internet Time'. (Win XP may require an update to work correctly). 'SP Time Sync' is a NTP compliant freeware client that has been found to work well and can be downloaded at: http://www.spdialer.com/timesync/

The server should be treated as a low volume server and is made available subject to a few simple conditions to ensure accuracy and consistency;

* Please don't swamp the server with continuous time requests. Keep individual time requests several minutes apart. For most PC users, synchronising once or twice a day is frequent enough to ensure your PC time is kept practically accurate. (Windows itself cannot maintain time to a theoretical accuracy of better than 52 milliseconds, regardless of how accurate the time reference it is syncronised to).

* Things can and will go wrong with the time service, particularly with the ADSL line (especially in the wet season in South Africa), the ISP, and occasionally with the mains power supplying the server and router, although this is all on a UPS.

* If you should find the service unavailable, please let us know with any details at:  ntp(at)baragwanath(dot)co(dot)za  We don’t at this stage, maintain a status page for the server. On occasions, the IP address for the service may change. Deleting and re-entering the URL in your time sync client after restarting the client will usually correct this.

Scheduled maintenance usually takes place every Sunday between 08h00 and 12h00 SAST during which time the service may not be available.

Find the time service useful ? Then we would like to hear from you at: ntp(at)baragwanath(dot)co(dot)za

PresenTense Time Server is an RFC standard multi protocol windows time server supporting the NTP4 and SNTP standards. You can use PresenTense Time Server to synchronize your PC to a primary time source such as an atomic clock on the internet or an in-house GPS reciever and offer time services to clients on your local area network.

Most leading GPS and Radio hardware clocks are supported via the serial port. Error notifications can be received via email or Syslog.

PresenTense Time Server is an enterprise class windows time server that is easy to install, configure and maintain.
